Our Nurses Travel: Unlike traditional forensic exam programs that may require victims to travel long distances, our Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANEs) provide care at conveniently designated exam locations across our partnered service areas, eliminating unnecessary travel and stress for victims.

What is Michigan Forensic Examiners?

Michigan Forensic Examiners (MFE) is a nonprofit organization that provides medical forensic exams and post-assault care to all victims of sexual and physical violence:

  • rape/ sexual assault

  • sex trafficking

  • elder abuse

  • domestic violence & intimate partner violence

  • Non-fatal strangulation

Our mission at MFE is to remove barriers and ensure every survivor of violence has access to expert, trauma-informed forensic care—delivered 24/7 by specially trained Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANEs)—wherever and whenever it’s needed.

Our vision is to lead the state in building a victim-centered, trauma-informed system of care that eliminates barriers, bridges systemic gaps, and ensures every survivor receives timely, compassionate forensic support—no matter where they are.

Our Services

Increase Access to Care

Our nurses travel to meet victims where they are. Our team is strategically located throughout Saginaw and the Thumb Counties, ensuring coverage across the areas we serve. We have established exam rooms within various organizations and hospitals, allowing us to dispatch a nurse to the closest available location for the patient. By eliminating the need for victims to travel an hour or more to specialized facilities or emergency departments, we increase the likelihood that they will seek care. This not only provides faster access to medical forensic exams but also encourages reporting and helps preserve crucial evidence.

Aid Emergency Physicians

MFE improves both victim/patient experiences and emergency department (ED) efficiency. Victims/patients often face long wait times in busy EDs, where more critical medical emergencies take priority. When MFE steps in—either by redirecting patients to designated exam locations or responding directly to the ED—we ensure victims are seen more quickly and in a more discreet manner. Our specialized forensic nurses take over the exam process, allowing physicians to focus on other emergency cases while ensuring the patient receives expert, trauma-informed care and proper evidence collection without unnecessary delays.

Enhance Care through Partnerships

We partner with advocacy centers and child service organizations through a nonprofit collaborative model. We provide the medical component of comprehensive care for victims of sexual and physical violence, allowing service agencies to focus on their core mission without the burden of staffing and maintaining their own forensic nursing services. MFE handles the recruitment, training, and ongoing education of SANEs and ensures that a nurse is immediately dispatched to the organization or the nearest exam location when needed. These partnerships have proven to be more beneficial for all organizations, both financially and logistically.

Provide Comfort and Discretion

Victims of sexual and physical violence have already endured deeply uncomfortable and traumatic experiences. Seeking care should not add to that discomfort. At MFE, we prioritize privacy, discretion, and trauma-informed care to create a more supportive and healing experience. Our exam spaces are intentionally designed in collaboration with partner agencies to be calm and comforting. Our specialized forensic nurses are trained to provide compassionate, expert care, ensuring that every step of the exam process is conducted with sensitivity and respect.
